MD/MPA in Health Policy & Management

NYU Grossman School of Medicine and NYU Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service offer a dual MD/MPA degree in medicine and health policy and management. This program gives students critical perspectives on the social, cultural, and economic forces that shape both healthcare delivery and health outcomes.

A collaboration with NYU Wagner, our dual MD/MPA program prepares you for a career in nearly any sector of the healthcare system. Our graduates work in diverse settings, ranging from private hospitals to nonprofits, consulting firms to managed-care organizations, and government agencies.

Timeline for Completing the MD/MPA in Health Policy and Management

The MPA in health policy and management is a 45-credit program that can be completed with the MD degree in five years.

During the first three years of medical school, you fulfill the preclerkship and some clinical components of the MD curriculum, earning 9 credits that can be applied toward the MPA. In your fourth year, you take time away from medical school to focus full time on the MPA program. In the summer between your fourth and fifth years, you return to medical school and continue completing the MD degree during your final year.

At the same time, you finish your MPA capstone project. You may consider developing and completing a research project that can be counted toward your MD degree electives, MD scholarly concentration, or MD student honors program project, in consultation with your advisor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and the dual MD/master’s degree program coordinator.
