Dual MD/Master’s Degrees MD/MBA in General Management

MD/MBA in General Management

As the U.S. healthcare system evolves, physicians often must care for patients while also managing the business aspects of healthcare. NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s dual MD/MBA degree in general management, offered in partnership with NYU Stern School of Business, is designed for aspiring physicians who wish to become leaders in the business of medicine, with the ultimate goal of improving patient care and outcomes.

The dual MD/MBA program equips you with the skills needed to develop business and management strategies in physician practices, hospital units, and entire healthcare organizations.

Our dual degree program prepares you for positions that may include medical director, pharmaceutical consultant, healthcare agency director, private practice manager, or business owner.

Timeline for Completing the MD/MBA in General Management

The 51-credit MBA degree program can be completed with your MD degree in 5 years. You enroll full time at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, completing aspects of the MD curriculum in the first three years. In your fourth year, you enroll full time at NYU Stern for the fall and spring semesters to begin the MBA program.

All students take courses in team communications, statistics and data analysis, and financial accounting and reporting as part of MBA coursework. You also complete a capstone core exploring either professional responsibility or the ethical and legal challenges of the modern corporation.

The summer before your fifth year, you return to medical school through the fall semester, followed by a final semester of MBA coursework in the spring. You are awarded your MD degree in May of the fifth year and your MBA upon successful completion of your final semester of the program.

The dual MD/MBA degree curriculum requires fewer credits than the 60-credit, stand-alone MBA and allows you to apply credits earned in certain aspects of the medical school curriculum toward the MBA. This enables you to earn both degrees in five years, instead of the six it would take to complete both programs separately.

MD/MBA Program Application, Tuition, and Funding

You apply to the MD/MBA in general management directly with NYU Stern during the fall of your third year at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, one year before you begin the MBA curriculum. The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), normally required for the MBA program, is waived for MD/MBA applicants. Dual degree applicants need only complete the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) as part of the MD/MBA admissions process.

During your first three years of the medical school curriculum and during the final MD semester of your fifth year, you receive an NYU Grossman School of Medicine scholarship to cover the cost of tuition for the MD degree program, provided each student maintains satisfactory academic progress in accordance with NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy. While you are enrolled in MBA classes, from the initial summer through three semesters of dedicated MBA coursework, you pay tuition to NYU Stern. For more information about NYU Stern MBA tuition rates, merit-based scholarships, and other options for financing your MBA degree, visit the NYU Stern website.

You may also consider obtaining a paid teaching or graduate fellowship during your time at NYU Stern after completing 9 credits toward your MBA, if you maintain a 3.0 GPA. Payment for these positions is in the form of tuition remission.
