Prospective MD Student Recruitment Liaison Program

The Office of Diversity Affairs partners with the Office of Admissions, Black and Latinx Students’ Association (BALSA), and LGBTQMed to offer the Liaison Program, which helps create a warm and welcoming environment for prospective students.

Any student who is invited for an interview at NYU Grossman School of Medicine may request to be matched with a student liaison from either BALSA or LGBTQMed to learn more about student life. Student liaisons often meet prospective students over lunch or coffee.

Office of Diversity Affairs Visiting Elective Fund

By and through its residency programs, NYU Grossman School of Medicine maintains a visiting elective program to students of all backgrounds to have the opportunity to explore and experience training at the medical school. The Office of Diversity Affairs recognizes the deep impact that exposure to elite training offered by NYU Grossman School of Medicine can have on aspiring medical professionals who come from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds in the field of medicine, and those who aspire to predominantly care for underserved and marginalized communities. To that end, the Office of Diversity Affairs offers limited funding to provide additional financial support to those students during their visiting elective.

Please note: Regardless of stipend status, before attending an elective, all students must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 with at least two weeks having passed since receipt of the second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine or since receipt of the Johnson & Johnson/Janssen vaccine. Per the recommendations of the Coalition for Physician Accountability, in-person away rotations in any specialty are limited to one per learner. Should a student fail to have the appropriate vaccinations and need to withdraw from the visiting elective program, stipend funding must be returned in full.

Description

Due to program schedules and demand, Visiting Elective funding is available to students admitted into a visiting elective program at NYU Grossman School of Medicine between June and November.

Funding includes up to $2,000 for reimbursement of registration fees, travel, and housing. Receipts are required for reimbursement.

Please note: Funding is limited and competitive and will be distributed on a first-come-first-serve basis.

This funding award is solely from our office to defray the expenses to a student and is not a guarantee of a residency interview and is not in any way related to the residency application process.

Students awarded with an Office of Diversity Affairs Visiting Elective Fund are also welcome to schedule a time to meet with the associate dean for diversity and inclusion and other members of the diversity leadership team during their rotation in the visiting elective program.

Eligibility Requirements

Recipients of the Office of Diversity Affairs Visiting Elective Fund will be chosen through a selection process that is open to all interested students who have a demonstrated commitment to the diverse practice of medicine; increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion within the clinical treatment and medical research profession; and/or serving historically underserved and vulnerable patient populations. All interested individuals are welcome to apply. Students from underrepresented backgrounds, including but not limited to those who identify as Black or African American, Latinx, Native American, Native Pacific Islander, or Native Alaskan, are encouraged to apply.

You must also be in good standing at your medical school and pursuing a medical degree at a Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)–accredited medical school or a Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) osteopathic medical school, in order to participate in a clinical rotation at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.
