Planning for Your Global Health Experience

Planning your global health experience with NYU Grossman School of Medicine's Global Health Initiatives takes time. Start by learning more about how to identify a project site and apply.

The application process follows these general steps:

  • Identify the dates in your academic schedule when you are able to travel.
  • Identify a site and confirm that it can accommodate you on your proposed dates. If necessary, the International Health Program office works with you to identify an NYU Grossman School of Medicine faculty mentor, an abroad-site mentor, or both.
  • If you are pursuing research, work with your proposed site supervisor to determine the project.
  • Confirm the project site and project with the International Health Program office.
  • Submit your application on OrgSync (Kerberos ID and password required) at least three months prior to departure. This streamlines the process and makes reviewing your application more efficient. If you are unable to access OrgSync, please contact the International Health Program and ask to be added to the portal. Although applications are accepted on a rolling basis, we strongly recommend that students apply early.

Funding for Travel

The International Health Program funds up to 85 percent of essential costs for student research experiences, with an award maximum of $3,000. No funding is currently available for clinical experiences.

Distribution of funds is determined by the Office of Student Affairs and is dependent upon submission of all required materials and the overall quality of the project. Essential costs include the following:

  • travel to and from the United States
  • accommodations
  • visas
  • international health insurance (required)

If you are interested in longer-term global health opportunities as a student, you may apply for a grant or fellowship. There are many opportunities through external sources, including the Doris Duke International Clinical Research Fellowship and the Fulbright–Fogarty Fellowships in Public Health. To discuss these and other options, contact Global Health Initiatives.
